Checked October 3, 2026. Start with Free if you are learning the basics. Consider Go when eligible tool limits interrupt your practice, Plus when you need broader model and tool access, and Pro only when a measured workload justifies the higher bill. Small teams should evaluate Business for workspace management and data handling as well as usage.
The best plan is the least expensive one that reliably supports your actual work. This guide separates OpenAI subscriptions from AI training, shows the current USD reference prices, and gives you a simple way to decide before paying.
ChatGPT plan comparison at a glance
These are reference prices in US dollars, checked against official OpenAI documentation. Your country, billing currency, applicable taxes and purchase channel can affect the checkout total. Features, model access and allowances can change. Confirm your account's options on the official ChatGPT pricing page.

Go, Plus and Pro currently use monthly billing; annual billing is not offered. Business has monthly and annual options, as shown above.
Free vs Go vs Plus: what should a learner choose?
Use Free for your first week. Try explaining a concept, improving an email, and reviewing a short practice document. Learn to give context, request a useful format and check the answer. A more expensive subscription will not fix missing information or remove the need to verify facts.
Go adds higher limits for eligible features such as uploads, image creation and data analysis. It is worth comparing when those are your recurring bottlenecks. Some advanced features require a higher plan, so check the exact tool you want rather than buying on the plan name alone. See the official Go overview.
Plus adds broader model and tool access, including the reasoning options and research tools currently offered to your account. It can be a sensible one-month test for a learner who works with files and multi-step tasks several times a week. Its limits can vary with system conditions. The Plus FAQ is the reference for current benefits.
Practical decision: if you finish your exercises comfortably on Free, keep your money. If a specific limit repeatedly stops a useful task, compare the cheapest plan that addresses that limit.
When can Pro make sense for a freelancer?
A freelancer should track completed work, review time and interruptions before choosing Pro. A high monthly price is easier to justify when extra capacity helps finish valuable work you already have. It is harder to justify while you are still searching for a repeatable workflow.
October 2026 update: Pro 200 is open to new subscriptions again. Eligible customers who held an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026 can retain the previous included allowance through October 29 while their subscription is active. After October 29, eligible subscriptions move to the lower included allowance at the same $200 monthly price. Other new subscriptions use the updated, lower allowance. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast among Pro tiers. Check the dedicated Pro FAQ before relying on an older comparison.
Eligible features may let you buy additional credits after using the included allowance, but those credits are an extra cost and do not extend every model or feature. Do not turn an allowance into a promised number of client projects. A short rewrite and a long, tool-heavy research task can consume different amounts. Treat any upgrade as a workload experiment, with quality checks and a budget you can sustain.
Plus vs Business: the small-team decision
Business provides a team workspace with centralized billing and administrative controls. OpenAI says it does not train on Business workspace data. A workspace needs at least two paid seats and can mix Standard and Premium. Premium offers more included usage. These are organization features to evaluate alongside cost, not a reason to give every employee the most expensive seat. See the Business FAQ.
For two people, the reference subscription totals are:
- Two Standard seats: $50 per month on monthly billing, or $480 per year on annual billing.
- One Standard and one Premium: $150 per month on monthly billing, or $1,440 per year on annual billing.
These are calculations from the published seat prices, before any applicable taxes or additional usage charges. The annual figures are annual commitments, not month-to-month payments at the advertised monthly equivalent. Review the billing rules before committing seats.
Example: a two-person studio could pilot Standard with synthetic briefs, then assess whether its heavier user needs Premium. Agree on allowed data, review responsibilities and spending limits first. A Business plan does not automatically authorize uploading a client's confidential material.
Three costs people often mix together
- ChatGPT subscription: access and included usage for your selected plan.
- API usage: separate metered usage for applications or workflows billed through the OpenAI API platform. Plus and Business do not include that API bill. Plus billing details and Business API separation explain the distinction.
- AI training: lessons and learning resources from a school such as TakeAICourse. School membership does not include ChatGPT subscriptions or external tool credits.
For purchases outside the US, do not estimate your bill by converting the dollar price yourself. OpenAI uses localized pricing, and subscriptions purchased in the iOS or Android app are managed through the relevant app store. Check currency, taxes, renewal amount and the purchase channel before confirming. See OpenAI's multi-currency billing guide.
A seven-day test before you upgrade
Use three representative tasks with public, synthetic or properly authorized inputs. For example: draft an email from a fictional brief, summarize a public article with source checks, and analyze a small synthetic spreadsheet.
- Write down what a correct result must contain before starting.
- Use the same tasks and checks throughout the week.
- Record active work time, review time, errors and the exact limits you encounter.
- Separate time genuinely saved from time spent fixing confident mistakes.
- Upgrade only when the missing capacity or feature is clear; repeat the test before the next renewal.
This is a proposed evaluation method, not a claim that a paid plan will produce a particular return. For occasional personal use, saving a few minutes may not justify another recurring bill. For paid work, judge the upgrade against your own completed, reviewed output.
Learn the workflow before buying more capacity
Start with ChatGPT for Beginners — 2026 Edition, our complete free five-lesson course. It covers conversations, the three-part prompt, uploads, web fact-checking and everyday practice. A free account gives you lesson access and saved progress; no card is required.
If you want a broader learning path, compare TakeAICourse school access: US$10 per month, US$80 per year or US$100 for lifetime access to current and future school courses. Individual paid courses are US$20. Monthly and annual memberships renew; lifetime access is a one-time purchase. Check the current terms before choosing. These prices buy educational content, not an OpenAI plan or API credits.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ChatGPT Plus to start learning?
No. Begin with tasks supported by Free and choose exercises around the tools available to you. Pay when you can identify a real constraint.
Is ChatGPT Pro always the best choice?
No. Choose by the work you finish and the limits you actually encounter. A higher fee is not evidence that your results will be more useful.
Can one person buy a single Business seat?
The current Business minimum is two paid seats per workspace. Include both seats in the budget, even if only one person is considering the plan.
Does a TakeAICourse membership include ChatGPT Plus?
No. The school provides learning content. External AI subscriptions and credits are purchased separately when needed.
Where should I check prices after this article's review date?
