Google officially announced that Gemini, its artificial intelligence model, has achieved state-of-the-art performance in Google Sheets, transforming the way more than 250 million monthly active users create, organize, and analyze data in spreadsheets. The announcement, made this week by Google Workspace, marks a turning point in the big techs' battle for control of the corporate productivity market.
The new feature allows users to describe in natural language what they want to do with their spreadsheets — from basic formatting to complex statistical analysis — and the AI executes the task automatically. "For the first time, you can simply tell the spreadsheet what you need, and it does it," stated Aparna Pappu, Google Workspace product manager, during the launch event.
The Gemini system integrated into Google Sheets uses an optimized version of the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, specialized in tabular data comprehension and spreadsheet context. According to technical documentation released by Google, the model was fine-tuned with more than 50 million examples of real spreadsheets, covering everything from simple financial control tables to complex enterprise forecasting models.
"This is not just an update — it's a complete reengineering of the user experience in spreadsheets," said Diego González, AI director at LATAM Tech Insights consulting firm, in an interview with RadarDeIA.
The technical architecture uses multimodal natural language processing (NLP), allowing Gemini to "understand" not only text but also the logical structure of data, relationships between cells, and the semantic context of the spreadsheet as a whole.
The launch positions Google directly against Microsoft Copilot in Excel, which since March 2024 has dominated sector headlines with its GPT-4 integration. According to IDC consulting data, the global AI productivity market is expected to reach $85 billion by 2027, with smart spreadsheets representing 22% of that value.

However, Google argues that its "AI-first by default" approach offers a learning curve advantage — users already familiar with the Sheets interface can start using Gemini in minutes.
The Latin American cloud productivity market grows 23% annually, according to a report by IDC Brasil. With more than 180 million internet users in the region and accelerated adoption of remote work, AI integration in productivity tools represents a paradigm shift.
