GPT-5

OpenAI's flagship LLM as of 2025–2026, with multimodal input, built-in reasoning and agentic tool use.

In common use since 2025

GPT-5 is OpenAI's flagship large language model as of 2025–2026, succeeding the GPT-4o / GPT-4.5 generation. It is the model behind ChatGPT Plus and Pro, the OpenAI API "gpt-5" family, and many integrations across Microsoft's Copilot products. As of 2026 it is one of three models — alongside Claude Sonnet 4 and Gemini 2.5 — that define the frontier capability ceiling.

Headline capabilities:

  • Native multimodality — text, image, audio and video as first-class inputs and outputs. Voice mode is the consumer-facing showcase.
  • Built-in reasoning — GPT-5 ships with a "reasoning" mode that does chain-of-thought internally before responding. The cheaper variants reason less; the Pro tier reasons more.
  • Tool use and agents — GPT-5 can call functions, browse the web, execute code, control browsers and operate other apps via the Operator interface.
  • Long context — well over 200k tokens on the API; effective context (where retrieval accuracy holds up) is substantial but shorter than the headline number.
  • Multiple variants — GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, GPT-5 nano (cheap, fast), GPT-5 Pro (heaviest reasoning), and Codex variants for coding.

Where GPT-5 leads in 2026: image and voice quality, breadth of tool integrations, the ChatGPT distribution channel, and the depth of the OpenAI developer platform (Assistants API, Realtime API, file storage, vector store, evals).

Where competitors push back: Claude Sonnet 4 generally wins on long-document reasoning and code generation; Gemini 2.5 wins on Workspace integration and search grounding; open-weight Llama 4 and DeepSeek win on cost at scale; specialised models (Cursor's Composer, Cognition's Devon) lead in narrow vertical workflows.

For a US developer or business team, GPT-5 is the safe default if you need one model. Build against the OpenAI SDK, ship a working product, and migrate or multi-source later if cost, latency or capability demands it. The OpenAI platform also includes mature tooling for evaluation, fine-tuning and structured output — the same surface area you would have to build yourself on top of an open-weight stack.

Pricing in 2026 has trended steadily downward for each generation, and GPT-5 mini in particular has become the workhorse for most production endpoints because it is dramatically cheaper than the flagship while remaining capable on most tasks.
